Unitary patent on Council agenda

Heads of government at today’s EU Council meeting will be discussing the euro, youth unemployment and boosting enterprise - but they may also find time to break the deadlock on the planned unitary patent
According to a tweet from the Council, the patent plans will be discussed at the informal meeting under the heading “completing the single market” with the aim of reaching a quick solution.
The plans for a unitary patent covering the EU, and associated unified patent court, were close to being finalised in December last year under the Polish presidency.
The main point of contention between member states is the site of the unified patent court, which will be established at the same time as the unitary patent system.
As often happens when new EU institutions are set up, there is haggling over the location, as it is thought to confer prestige...
