Courts may force Irish ISPs to block sites

Rights holders will have powers to demand that ISPs in Ireland block websites accused of infringing copyright if the government amends legislation before the end of January

The government is reviewing the Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000 but said it wants to amend part of the legislation with a statutory instrument. This means that the relevant minister Sean Sherlock could approve changes on blocking sites without consulting parliament first.

The proposals, published today, have led more than 45,000 people to sign a petition called Stop SOPA Ireland – a reference to the US anti-piracy bill which led to a mass online blackout last week.
