Canada plans to “bundle” .ca IDNs

Registrants would have exclusive rights to buy groups of .ca domains containing French-language characters under proposals by Canada's national registry
The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) hopes to introduce character variants such as é to represent the country’s second official language. It released the proposals last year but public comments raised concerns about phishing and defensive brand costs.
The revised proposals – open for public comment from today until February 24 – suggest “bundling” character variants together. This means that only a company owning the domain preside.ca could register préside.ca, prèsïdë.ca and any other variants.
