Two US lawmakers who had co-sponsored proposed anti-piracy legislation have withdrawn their support following online protests from sites such as Wikipedia and WordPress.

Marco Rubio and Roy Blunt say they now reject the Protect Intellectual Property Act, which US Congressman are debating along with the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa). Six other US politicians have also withdrawn support for the bills.

Another lawmaker no longer supporting Sopa, Dennis Ross, said on Twitter: “As a true free marketer I want IP protected correctly.”

Thousands of sites protested yesterday against the bills.
