British man could be extradited for US copyright charges

A judge has today ruled that British authorities can extradite a man to the US for infringing copyrighted material after he hosted sites which linked to protected films and television programmes
District Judge Purdy said Richard O’Dwyer could face criminal charges abroad. The 23-year-old would be the first British citizen extradited to the US for copyright infringement if the Secretary of State approves the ruling.
At Westminster Magistrates’ Court, O’Dwyer’s lawyer Ben Cooper said he would appeal the decision to the High Court. The maximum sentence in the US for infringing copyright is 10 years in prison.
