Icann under pressure from more advertisers

Managing Internet Intellectual Property

A fifth advertising organisation has expressed its concerns over the new gTLD programme.

Managing director of the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), Steven Loerke, wrote to Icann chief executive, Rod Beckstrom, to express his "deep concerns and strong reservations" about the programme.

Loerke's worries centre on increased consumer confusion, cybersquatting and costly defensive registrations for brand owners.

The WFA joins the Association of National Advertisers, Interactive Advertising Bureau, the Association of American Advertising Agencies and the UK Direct Marketing Association, in opposition to new gTLDs.
