The UK government has dropped measures to introduce site blocking in the Digital Economy Act, after they were dismissed as cumbersome and unworkable
Section 17 of the DEA, which was passed last year, provided powers to grant blocking injunctions requiring ISPs to prevent access to internet locations used to infringe copyright. Section 18 set out what measures the secretary of state must take before making regulations under Section 17.
But in a report published today, media regulator Ofcom said that sections 17 and 18 "are unlikely to be able to provide for a framework for site blocking which would be effective".
