Brand owners seek clarity on gTLD rules

Peter Ollier, Singapore

“No-one knows with any certainty where new gTLDs will lead us,” admitted Icann CEO Rod Beckstrom at a press conference on Monday

For brand owners, however - two things are certain: they have to revise their domain name strategy and will face increased costs as they try to cope with a system that is packed with uncertainty.

"The gTLD expansion is of great concern to IP owners because it is taking place in an internet setting where cybersquatting is rampant and other online crimes are increasing in severity," said Claudio DiGangi, external relations manager - internet & the judiciary for INTA.

With the clock now ticking down to the opening of the application window in January 2012, the priority is to work out important details about how the trade mark protection mechanisms in the gTLD Applicant Guidebook will work.
