gTLD applicants celebrate Icann decision

Applicants for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) have welcomed the landmark decision that will open up the internet
"We are very excited. We have been waiting a long time for this", said Trevor Bowden, co-founder of the .eco domain team that is part of a global environmental campaign.
The Icann resolution, passed with 13 supporting votes, means that almost any word in every language could potentially be registered as a gTLD.
Multi-national businesses and cities are expected to be at the front of the queue when Icann opens the application window on January 12 2012. After a three- month process that ends on April 12, an evaluation period will last until November 2012 before final decisions are made.
