This Saturday July 24 will see .uk celebrate a quarter of a century in existence.
The domain came into operation when in 1985 when the first registrations were taken. The early years saw Dr Willie Black along with a Naming Committee control the domain.
By the mid-1990s the increasing popularity of the domain led to the formation of the not-for-profit registry Nominet in 1996, which took over the management of 26,000 domains.
In February 2000 Nominet marked the one millionth .uk registration.
Today, .uk has 8.4 million registrations making one of the most popular top-level domains in the world.
