New Chinese trade mark rules cause chaos

China’s Trade Mark Office has caused uncertainty for brand owners by introducing and then partly rescinding stringent new requirements for filing documents

The new guidelines, which were supposed to come into force on July 1, would have required a trade mark applicant to personally sign all official forms submitted to the CTMO, including applications and oppositions, and to provide a copy of the company's certificate of incorporation.

Speaking to Managing IP on July 1, a lawyer for one of China's leading IP firms was defiant: "My advice to trade mark owners is simple: forget the rule."
