Standards to be set for non-traditional marks

05 July 2010

The member states of the Singapore Treaty on the Law of Trademarks last week agreed to define rules for representing non-traditional marks in trade mark applications.

The rules will cover hologram, motion, colour, position and sound marks.

At its meeting on June 29, the Working Group reviewing Rule 3(4) to (6) of the Treaty’s Regulations agreed to recommend that the Singapore Treaty Assembly change the Regulations when it meets in September this year.

The Singapore Treaty was adopted in March 2006 and establishes office administration rules for trade mark applications.

It has 20 contracting parties, including the latest – Italy – which said this week that the Treaty will come into force on September 21 this year.
