Espinel grilled by Senate on IP plans

Victoria Espinel was questioned yesterday by the US Senate Judiciary Committee during an oversight hearing on her newly-created role as the so-called IP Tsar
Espinel was confirmed as the US Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC) in December last year.
Earlier this week, she released her strategic plan to bolster IP enforcement coordination among US government agencies. She formally submitted the plan to Congress yesterday.
IP-friendly senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont began the questioning this morning, stressing his concern about the link between IP rights violations and organised crime, as well as the risk of counterfeit products being sold to the US military.
Espinel said the strategic plan addresses both issues, particularly by increasing cooperation and coordination with international trading partners and the Department of Defense.
