IP Tsar releases strategic plan

US Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator Victoria Espinel has released the first ever Joint Strategic Plan on Intellectual Property Enforcement to mixed reviews

Industry groups including the RIAA, MPAA and the Copyright Alliance applauded the report, but at least one group has some reservations about the plan.

The report highlights six areas of focus for the Office of the Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC): 1) leading by example; 2) increasing transparency; 3) ensuring efficiency and coordination; 4) enforcing rights internationally; 5) securing the US supply chain; and 6) building a data-driven government.

These categories include a combined 33 enforcement strategy action items meant to combat IP infringement.

The lack of empirical data on IP was underscored in an April report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). That report was mandated by the 2008 PRO-IP Act, which established the IPEC position.

Espinel was confirmed as the first IPEC in December last year.
