UNITAID agrees funding for drug patent pools

Patent pools for AIDS drugs are one step closer to becoming reality with the establishment of a new Medicines Patent Pool Foundation

In 2008, UNITAID, which partners with organisations including the WHO and Unicef, began work to set up a collective management structure for medicines patents known as a patent pool, which will initially focus on drugs to treat HIV and AIDS. On Tuesday the chairman of its executive board said that it will provide the new Foundation with $4.4 million for its first year of operations.
