Interview: UK minister sets out IP priorities

In an interview with Managing IP, David Lammy, the UK’s minister for intellectual property, addressed his policy priorities, weaknesses in the IP system and how the UK IPO will respond to the challenges of harmonisation
What are your priorities for IP?
The UK's competitive advantage lies in knowledge-intensive industries, so we need to create the conditions in which they can thrive. This means making sure that the intellectual property framework reflects the way that the world is changing around us. This framework needs to have fairness at its heart, encourage innovation and balance the needs of consumers, creators and businesses to ensure everyone gets the best out of the IP system. These are the objectives I want to meet in making sure the copyright system is adapted to the digital age.
I want a patent system that supports our innovative technology companies. In the global economy that requires international action, and that is why we have led efforts to find the way forward on the Community Patent.
