Icann has granted permission for the operator of .tel to launch internationalised domain names (IDNs) to the left of the dot or second-level domain.
Telnic, the registry for .tel, was notified of Icanns decision last Thursday.
This means that Telnic will be able to offer non-Latin characters in domains.
However, the registry has no plans to apply to Icann for permission to offer the generic top-level domain (gTLD), or .tel part, in non-Latin characters.
At its meeting in Seoul last October, Icann approved the use of non-Latin characters in a limited number of country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) with a fast-track process starting on November 16.
Telnic has not finalised when the new IDN domains will be rolled out.
