Microsoft tries to head off European antitrust charges

The European Commission has described Microsoft’s plan to allow customers to choose which web browser they install on their PC as a “step in the right direction”
As part of efforts to avoid further fines under European antitrust rules, the US software company has
proposed
adding a consumer ballot screen that would allow users to install competing web browsers, set one of those browsers as a default, and disable Microsoft's own Internet Explorer.
