EU wants voluntary deal on online piracy

The European Commission is to encourage internet service providers and copyright owners to negotiate a voluntary agreement to tackle online piracy at the EU level

Margot Fröhlinger, director of the knowledge based economy division in the internal market directorate, told Managing IP that her team was inviting the two sides to talks next month to establish whether there is the political will to work at the European level to find a solution to the problem of illegal downloading.

But she added: "I'm not absolutely sure there is."
