More people are being sentenced for IP crimes in the UK, according to a report on enforcement

The 2008-2009 IP Crime Report, published this week, cited figures form the Ministry of Justice showing that 1,260 people were sentenced under the Trade Marks Act and the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act in 2007.

The number of people sentenced has increased ever year since 2002, when it was just 402.

However, the number of immediate custodial sentences fell from 306 in 2006 to 268 in 2007.

Meanwhile, figures from the Home Office show that the amount of money seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act, which includes IP crime, was £135.7 million ($220 million) in 2007-8.

The amount seized has increased every year since 2003-4, when it was just £54.5 million, according to the Report.

The Report was compiled by the IP Crime Group, which was created in 2004 and comprises representatives of government, industry and enforcement agencies.

It includes a foreword by the IP minister, David Lammy.
