iiNet starts defence in copyright infringement case Australian internet service provider iiNet has launched a strong defence in a closely watched copyright infringement case. The first hearing took place in a Federal Court on March 25 and iiNet has since further clarified its position on whether its users are committing copyright infringement. On November 20 last year, a coalition of Australian film makers took iiNet to court to test the liability for online copyright infringement in Australia. The coalition is claiming that iiNet did not take enough action to prevent its users from illegally sharing files over BitTorrent networks, despite being presented with evidence by the companies.

According to the statement of claim, the coalition is arguing that iiNet users have infringed copyright by making available, copying and transmitting a series of films and TV shows such as Ocean's 13, Prison Break and Bones. They claim that iiNet did not...
