ECJ needs reform, say judges

The European Court of Justice should be reformed to improve the quality of decisions and reduce its backlog, judges said yesterday

Speaking at the Fordham IP Conference in Cambridge, Lord Hoffmann of the UK’s House of Lords (who retires next week) suggested that the ECJ should be able to choose which cases it takes, as the US Supreme Court does.

At the moment, the ECJ is obliged to hear any cases referred from national courts in Europe, as well as appeals arising from European institutions, such as OHIM.
