Recession hits CTM applications

Applications for Community trade marks fell sharply in the last quarter of 2008, with US and UK businesses showing the biggest drops

The fall meant that the total number of applications filed in 2008 declined compared to the previous year – the first annual fall in applications since 2002.

Statistics revealed by OHIM today show that the Office received 87,327 CTM applications in 2008 compared to 88,339 in 2007.

The drop in applications is most likely to be due to cutbacks caused by the global recession,...
