Vote for the best and worst IP jurisdictions

Managing Intellectual Property

IP practitioners worldwide can vote for the best and worst jurisdictions for IP protection and enforcement as part of the second annual Global IP Index survey

The survey, which is published by law firm Taylor Wessing, can be completed online at http://www.global-ip-index.com.

Anyone who has knowledge of three or more jurisdictions is invited to participate. Three jurisdictions have been added this year – the EU, Ireland and Turkey – and the survey covers five rights, with designs and domain names added to patents, trade marks and copyright.

A new question focuses on cost-effectiveness of enforcing IP rights, in light of the state of the economy and focus on the costs of litigation.

Submissions can be made until the end of February, and the Index results will be published in May. All answers will remain anonymous and no personal data will be shared with third parties.

The first Index was published in May last year. It named the UK, US and Germany as the top three jurisdictions in the world for IP protection, with China ranked bottom of the 22 jurisdictions covered.

Last year’s results were based on 9,333 jurisdiction assessments provided by 341 respondents from all over the world.

The questionnaire for the 2009 Global IP Index can be completed in a few minutes, and anyone who takes part will receive a free copy of the report once it is published.

A summary of the findings in the Index will be published in the May 2009 issue of Managing IP.
