Australia to review gene patents

Australia’s Senate launched an enquiry into the impact of granting gene patents in the country on November 19
The move comes after Australian company Genetic Technologies tried to enforce its exclusive licence to use patents owned by Myriad Genetics to test for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. These genes increase the chances of breast cancer.
After widespread criticism in the media that the move would lead to fewer tests for the genes being carried out and possible increases in costs, Genetic Technologies allowed public testing to continue.
