WIPO Assembly set to appoint new head

James Nurton, London

WIPO member states will meet next week to appoint the new director-general of the Organisation

Deputy director-general Francis Gurry was nominated as the candidate for the post of director-general by the Coordination Committee at its meeting on May 13.

If appointed by the General Assembly, which represents all WIPO member states, next Monday then he will serve a six-year term, starting on October 1 2008.

He will replace Kamil Idris, who is stepping down from the role of director-general.

The member states are also due to appoint a Working Group to fix the conditions of the appointment and draw up a draft contract.

The Working Group would report back by September 26.

Other matters to be considered at the meeting of the 36th General Assembly, which runs from September 22 to September 30, are reports from the advisory committee on enforcement, the intergovernmental committee on IP and genetic resources, the committee on development and IP and the standing committee on copyright and related rights.

There will also be a progress report on the new construction project, as well as audit and oversight reports.

Alongside the General Assembly there will be meetings of the assemblies of the various agreements administered by WIPO, such as the Madrid Union, Hague Union and PCT Union.
