Mark Cohen has today left his role as senior IP attaché at the US Embassy in Beijing to work as of counsel at Jones Day.
Cohen took on the newly created role of IP attaché in Beijing in 2004. At the time, the USPTO said his role was to "work with government officials to improve Chinese intellectual property laws, regulations and enforcement procedures".
In a 2005 interview with Managing IP, Cohen said another key part of his work was to "address the concerns of US businesses and rights holders about the protection and enforcement of their IP rights in China".
Cohen joined the USPTO in 2001, working first in the Office of Legislative and International Affairs, where he handled China-related copyright and enforcement issues, and later in the Office of Enforcement.
A USPTO spokesperson said that until a permanent replacement for Cohen is found, staff from the Office will be doing six-week rotational stints in the Beijing Embassy.
In 2006, Cohen took part in a Managing IP roundtable on the future of IP in China.
