Web seminar to address gTLD expansion

Managing Intellectual Property

Panellists will shed light on ICANN’s recent expansion of the generic-top-level domain (gTLD) space during a web seminar held jointly by Managing IP and VeriSign next month

The web seminar will take place on August 6 at 10am EDT/3pm BST/4pm CEST.

Last month, ICANN, the body that regulates internet domain names, approved the biggest-ever expansion of the gTLD space, creating the potential for hundreds of new gTLDs to be launched.

Today, there are only 20 gTLDs, such as .com, .net and .org. But under the new plans, almost anyone may be granted the right to set up a gTLD, as long as they pass a number of ICANN-proposed tests, which are set to be finalized in the next few months.

During the web seminar, which takes place, speakers will discuss the proposed expansion, provide tips for navigating the application process and advise listeners on how to protect their rights in the face of increased cybersquatting, as well as how to seize upon the opportunities the changes may present.

Participants will include J Scott Evans, senior legal director - global brand and trademark at Yahoo! Inc, Mike Rodenbaugh of Rodenbaugh Law, Edmon Chung of DotAsia and Bruce Tonkin, chief technology officer of Melbourne IT Digital Brand Services. Click here for more details and to register.
