Open a new front in the war on fakes

Can IP owners take action against landlords who allow counterfeits to be sold on their premises? Reports from seven jurisdictions

There is no secret about what New York's Canal Street, Beijing's Silk Market, Istanbul's Grand Bazaar and Bangkok's Patpong Market have in common. These major tourist cities are certainly not alone in having visibly permanent outlets overtly selling counterfeit products. Returning holidaymakers bearing cheap designer copies will probably not even, thanks to Article 60 of the TRIPs Agreement, have them seized if spotted by Customs. It is little wonder then that brand owners see as both a top priority and one of their largest challenges the need to reverse public perceptions of counterfeiting as a victimless and minor crime. To do so necessarily means tackling these centres of overt sales head on.
