On paper, Asia has much to offer pharmaceutical companies: highly trained, low-cost scientists to help them develop new blockbuster drugs at a time when many of their most lucrative products are coming off-patent; and a burgeoning middle class whose affluent lifestyles are increasingly likely to make them succumb to ailments and illness that require treatment from products such as cholesterol-lowering drugs and heart disease pills.
