Music copyright and the Internet

The future of copyright protection for recorded music may be determined by something called MP3. Everyone agrees MP3 will change the current state of the music industry. Some fear it will destroy it.

Put simply, MP3 is an infringer-friendly audio format that compresses recorded music to a digital size that can be easily transmitted across the Internet. Using MP3, you can load a copy of your favourite copyrighted song from a CD to your computer and send it to your best friend or to a hundred of your best friends. Better still, you can post it on a web site where everyone in the world can get a copy ... for free.
