Russia’s wake-up call

As a survey reveals that IP enforcement in Russia is as big a problem as tax and customs, rights owners are turning to the courts for support. But Emily Downes finds that there is an urgent need for improved enforcement

The Coalition for Intellectual Property Rights in Russia (CIPR) published a survey in February 2000 revealing that counterfeiting costs businesses more than $1 billion a year in the country. The CIPR survey found that intellectual property, especially trade mark protection, is on a level with taxes and customs as a key obstacle to doing business in the region. And, according to Peter Necarsulmer, president of the CIPR, the findings are ?a wake-up call for Russia?.
