How to extract value from dormant IP

Dust off your dormant IP and reap the benefits of donating it to a non-profit organization. Not only can it bolster your bottom line; it can also foster R&D and academia, reports Ingrid Hering

A challenging economic climate can raise the spectre of cost cutting and spur a flurry of mergers and acquisitions. It can also force a company to examine its assets more closely to determine whether it is extracting optimal value from its IP.

Conducting an IP inventory is only one step in the process of maximising your R&D investments. Once you know what you have, you must decide what to do with it. Sometimes the opportunity cost of maintaining a piece of dormant IP can be greater than offloading it, or giving it away.

Donating IP is by no means a new option in the IP management tool kit, but it has grown in profile and popularity over recent years, particularly in the US where it originated.
