Protecting your domain in the expanded EU
Lori Faye Fischler examines the protection available on the internet in the new EU
member states, and (opposite) provides an update on internationalized domain names and the .eu domain
With the opening up of trade across the EU, and 10 new member
states joining on May 1, corporations need to consider the level
and implications of their presence in the candidate countries. In
terms of the internet, the expansion creates a number of
opportunities and challenges for brand owners when reviewing their
strategy for and managing their domain name portfolio. These
include the creation of a local identity for marketing and trading
purposes, as well as protecting brands against a potential increase
of threat from third party abuses. Alongside this, the availability
of non-English language domain names, or internationalized domain
names (IDNs), is increasing across member states and steps are
being made to introduce the much anticipated .eu domain name for
Europe. This article will discuss each of these key important
developments.
