Patent crisis looms as demand soars

Is the world facing a global patent crisis? Some patent owners fear that booming applications, lack of quality, duplication of work and excessive costs are forcing existing frameworks to crack. Can anything be done before it is too late? James Nurton reports

Early last month, patent specialists gathered in Washington DC at a conference entitled "Uncertainty & cost – averting a global patent crisis". The meeting, jointly organized by the International Intellectual Property Institute and George Washington University Law School, included speakers from companies such as Intel, Apple, HP and Abbott, as well as academics, financiers and four former heads of the USPTO. One participant described the day-long meeting as "a very candid dialogue".
