Using IP rights is not a game

Multiplayer online games are one of the biggest growth areas on the internet. J Michael Monahan says that, while these games pose new challenges for IP owners, infringement should be treated as seriously as in the real world

The recent explosion in massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) presents numerous puzzles for IP lawyers and their clients. This new virtual frontier contains an eclectic population that includes superheroes, wizards, dragons, starship pilots, as well as adidas, Reebok, Dell and a Reuters desk. Suddenly, the already complex world of intellectual property faces new challenges and opportunities in constantly changing virtual environments that can be difficult to grasp, let alone to explain.
