Danone's spat with joint venture partner Wahaha has highlighted the risks of investing in China. Peter Ollier examines what went wrong

Business disputes between foreign investors and domestic companies happen every day in every country. Interests can diverge, cultures can clash and arguments over contract details can escalate. As former partners prepare to split, disagreements often focus on IP – in particular over trade mark rights and any brands or technologies created during the period of cooperation.
